For many families, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way people viewed best education practices. Gabriel M. had sent her oldest daughter through public schools her whole life, but when it came to her younger children, the pandemic hit at an especially impressionable age and caused her family to reevaluate what type of schooling works best. Upon enrolling her youngest at Academy of Excellence (AoE)’s virtual model through the choice program, Gabriel immediately saw positive results.

Her children work at their own pace on a curriculum that has been approved by both the school and their parents. It’s engaging, tailored to their learning needs, and best of all, affordable for their family. AoE’s system works so well that Gabriel claims her son is shedding his previous anxieties about subjects he doesn’t feel as comfortable with while becoming a more independent learner. He eagerly talks about his school subjects, and they aren’t slowed down by the pressures of keeping up with a mandated curriculum or other students in a traditional school setting. It creates a calm yet engaging learning environment.

When asked what advice she would give to other parents who might be struggling to find the right educational fit for their children, Gabriel responds, “Slow down. Take a breath. Look at your child and what their needs are—where they are happy, where their face shines… always advocate [for that].” These words ring true to our mission here at School Choice Wisconsin as we continue to help families navigate their educational options.
